Some people need to rinse with a mouthwash to feel as though their daily routine for dental care is complete, others are good without it.  It’s mostly a matter of personal preference but as with most things, there are some basic pros and cons associated with the habit.

A mouthwash tastes good and leaves the user with a fresh, clean breath and the self-confidence to face the day.  The right kind of rinse can help to prevent tooth decay and some claim to be able to whiten the teeth and remove the dental plaque buildup that can lead to gum disease.   Speaking of claims, always remember to check the label of any over the counter dental product to see that it has earned the Seal of Acceptance from the American Dental Association.

Dentists caution patients not to let using a mouthwash take the place of proper oral care.  It may be easier to swish and go but without brushing and flossing your dental health will suffer.

If you do use mouthwash choose a formula that is alcohol-free.  Alcohol can irritate sensitive oral tissue and add to the discomfort brought on by an existing mouth sore.  If you follow the recommended precautions, however, a mouthwash can add a breath of fresh air (pun intended) to your regular care regimen.
